She Really Disappointed Me

October 25, 2019 0 Comments

To be honest with you, I had someone really disappoint me recently.

Frustrated About Not Booking the Job

As you probably know, I offer private online mentoring programs

This has allowed me to help people break into or advance their acting and modeling career. By working online, I am able to help folks from literally around the world. This is something I love doing so much, that I set aside 5 days each month to mentor people.

A woman wanted to talk with me because an agent contacted her about representation. She had some concerns and wanted to discuss a number things with me.
She wanted a 2-hour session but could’t pay me until the end of the week. I knew that she needed to respond to the agent immediately, so I told her, I would have the session that day. I mentioned that I was doing this on good faith. The only thing I asked was that she keep her promise and make the payment without me having to remind her.

The payment date came and went. I sent an email reminder. No word. Another week went by, no word. It has been a month now and never heard back from the woman.

At first, I was angry. Not from losing the money, but this person out and out lied to me. I spent a lot of time, sent her important industry links that really helped her, and she completely ripped me off.

Then, I went through another phase of just losing faith. I thought, how could someone look me in the eye and (we were sharing cameras and monitors during out session) and just lie. I started feeling that I was losing faith in people.

That phase did not last long. I then started thinking that she must be in a very bad place, if this is how she needs to run her life. I would have been fine if she told me that she was having financial problems and needed to make small payments over a long period of time. That would have been fine. Just to show me good faith and that she would keep her word.

But, ultimately, I viewed it as if I were a store owner. Most of my customers are nice and decent people. There are a few who will shop lift.

I came away deciding not to change the way I deal with the world. I always allow actors and models to pay on a monthly basis if paying the full amount at once is any issue. That holds true for private online mentoring or my in-person workshops.

If I stayed angry, bitter and just felt that the world was an untrustworthy place, filled with cheats and dishonest people, then I would have lost a lot
more than just some money. I would have lost part of my soul that truly believes that there are so many great people in this world – doing amazing things for others.

If you run into a bad situation in the acting or modeling industry, feel, whatever it is you feel. But, really think about the experience and see if you can understand what happened and hopefully walk away at some point without keeping the anger and bitterness inside you.

If you have experienced something like this in your life, feel free to share it here with others.
