I was so fortunate because of 1 actors act of kindness changed my career.
I had a contact who knew an agent at the William Morris Agency. I sent the agent my materials and she asked me to meet with her.
On the train ride to New York, I saw an actor I had worked with about a year ago. I decided to follow him and re-introduce myself.
He asked what I was doing in New York. I told him I was meeting with an agent. He asked to look at my materials. He was so nice. He wrote down the name and number of his New York agent and gave it to me. He said keep it in case you find yourself looking for an agent.
Didn’t Realize 1 Actor Was Offering an Act of Kindness That Would Change My Acting Career
Since I was going to meet with an agent at a global agency I certainly accepted his generous information but didn’t think I would ever contact his agent.
Meeting With The Willam Morris Agent
The agent from The William Morris Agency was very nice to me. She asked me to give her another headshot and resume. She noticed the area code on my resume read 301. She asked where I used to live. I told her that I still lived in Maryland. She had already seen my resume when I initially sent her my materials, so I was really surprised by her questioning my area code.
Not a Good Meeting
She told me that she couldn’t work with anyone who didn’t live in New York and thanked me for coming. I was devastated. Here, I thought I might have representation with a global agency and now, she was saying thanks but no thanks.
This is How 1 Actors Act of Kindness Changed My Acting Career
Honestly, I just wanted to take the next train back home. But, I thought that while I was already in New York, I might as well call the agent whose name I was given.
The agent told me that Tony (the actor who I spoke with on the train) had called the agent, told her how good my materials were and that I might be calling her. She told me to stop by.
I Began Working With the Agent
The agent made it clear that she didn’t like working with out of town talent because they typically stop attending go-sees (modeling auditions) after not getting booked a few times.
I promised her that as long as I wasn’t already booked out for a job, I will always travel to New York whenever she called me. We tested things out for 3 months and I worked with the agency for over a decade – until they closed.
1 Actors Act of Kindness Changed My Acting Career
Although this was a commercial modeling agency (the best in New York) it allowed me to easily make contacts with acting agencies as well.
I have never forgotten what Tony’s act of kindness did for me. He truly changed my acting career and life. That is why I spend so much time trying to help others. I know what 1 simple act of kindness can do to change one’s career and life.
