Should You Do This?
I recently had an audition for a long running TV show. The casting director asked me to make a change to my read in one of the scenes. What quickly went through my mind was, should I change the way I believe the character should react, and continue to read in the way I think is right? Or, should I do what the casting director asked?
I spent a lot of time working on and giving my character life. I created a really interesting concept that was different than what would typically be done for this role.

After being asked to make a change I quickly decided to take the casting director’s suggestion and incorporate it into my idea. This way, I gave him
what he wanted, and made an adjustment to my read that still made things a little different then a typical read.
Sometimes a casting director might really like your interpretation and still ask you to make changes. This could be done just to see if you have the acting skills to listen and adjust to his or her direction.
The casting director has read the entire script. If you are reading for a smaller role, you will normally be sent the sides. A short portion of the script which is read during the audition.
You won’t know nearly as much about what happened before and after your scene takes place then the casting director.
I highly recommend you listen and make the requested changes. If you really believe it does not work then talk with the casting director. But, I suggest you at least give his or her idea a try. If you feel so strongly about your concept, then ask if you can try it again your way.
