The Actor’s Strike Forced Me to Focus On 4 Projects
The actor’s strike absolutely forced me to focus on 4 helpful projects. Things can get really busy between auditioning, working, and doing other acting business-related things that sometimes really important projects get pushed aside.
The Actor’s Strike Forced Me to Focus On 4 Projects
1. Working On a New Headshot
With the Actor’s Strike happening, I decided to begin the process of getting a new headshot. I am hoping that within one month the headshot will be completed. It is essential that all actors have up-to-date and effective headshots. Without one, it makes it so hard to be requested to audition. Casting directors make quick decisions on who gets to read for a role by quickly looking at hundreds of submitted headshots. Yours must be a great representation of you, look interesting and clearly show others what types you should be reading for.
2. Work On Your Acting Reel
When actors are just getting started, they won’t have an acting reel. If you don’t have one, now could be the perfect time to get together with fellow actors and see if you can create a group of people to write, act, shoot, do sound and edit a short film. This can be a great way to get more experience in front of the camera, build up your resume and add a clip to a reel.
Another way to get in a film is to contact local colleges and see if any of the film classes have students shooting films for the class. If so, see if you can audition.
3. Create A List of Contacts In A Spread Sheet
I have a list of over 1,200 contacts in an Excel spread sheet. They are the casting directors, agents, producers, art/creative directors, agents, photographers and others whom I have met
in the industry. I have their names, phone numbers, email and website address. This will be
very helpful when you begin marketing and staying in touch with them.
4. Begin Marketing To Those On Your Special List
Once you have a list together (maybe share contacts with fellow actors) then you can begin
sending them emails in order to stay in touch. For some of the contacts, I sent a clip from
the scene I had with Tom Hanks in A Man Called Otto. Even if you have worked with someone
recently, it is easy for people to forget about us. So, send them a short note and remind them
what you have been doing and hopefully, they will bring you in for auditions or direct bookings.
