Should You Shoot Your Head Shot Inside or Outdoors?

November 2, 2018 5 Comments

Do you have your head shot taken inside or outdoors?

There are pros and cons to both types, so let’s start with shooting your
head shot inside.

Shooting a Head Shot Inside

When you shoot a head shot indoors, you have complete control over
the environment. Your eyes will not slightly close due to the glare.
Your hair will not move around by any wind blowing.
There will be no distractions with people watching, asking questions
or trying to get in the shot. It is simply so much easier to have your
head shot taken inside.

Here is a good example of an indoor head shot.

There are many things that I like about
this head shot taken by the New York
head shot photographer Joe Henson.

This indoor head shot, does not have
the typical white (or other color) screen
behind me. The background is completely blurred out.

You can’t see that the shot was done in a hallway.
My face jumps out at you with no distractions.
And, by not using a plain screen behind me, there
is more personality and warmth to the shot.

Shooting a Head Shot Out Doors

Although, it is true, there are more complications
when shooting outdoors, the head shot has a very
different feel than shooting inside.

I believe all actors should hire a makeup artist when
shooting their head shot.

It is a smart investment because you will simply
look better when you have a great makeup artist on the set.

The makeup artist can also keep an eye out to make sure
your hair is staying in place. If your wardrobe shifts or
looks bunched up they can make the adjustments.
Sometimes they will catch things the photographer might not see.

The actor needs to make sure that their eyes stay completely wide
open and not squint at all during the session.

The real advantage of shooting out side is that it will give
your head shot a very different type of feel than shooting
inside. Although, all of the background needs to be blurred,
still, we get a much more interesting look and feel when
shooting outdoors

Here is a good example of an outdoor head shot taken.

Although I really like both head shots, I would say
that if I had to chose my favorite, it is the outdoor
shot.

  1. I think my outside shots have always looked much better than the studio shots and I’m happier I think being outside, so that shows.

      HI Amy,

Thanks for your thoughts. Have you ever tried inside, but not in front of a screen?
I am going to play around with a new head shot in a few days. I am going to see if it is possible
to have the studio door open so it looks like I am outside, but will actually be in doors.

How do you find your head shot photographers?

  2. I love my outdoor headshots. There’s something more natural about it, but I do have an indoor shot that I like too. I paid extra to use the hair and make person associated with the photographer. They have been working together for many years and it was so worth not having to worry about it. These photos will follow you around for awhile and some jobs book from headshots so it’s worth getting the best that you can.

    • Aaron Marcus says:

Not everyone can do both in door and out door shots,
but I do like not having the traditional screen for a
      background.

I agree with you. It is a wise investment to have a makeup artist
who has worked with the photographer. The makeup artist will know
what the photographer wants and needs. And, if there are any makeup
issues, most photographers will make sure it is fixed.
