Should You Pay Attention to the Writers Notes in a Script?

June 2, 2018 0 Comments

When you are reading a script, sometimes you will find writers notes. A question that I hear a lot is whether an actor should pay attention to the writers notes. Absolutely. Always pay attention to them.

But, the real question is, should you follow the suggestions.

NOT NECESSARILY

You are not a puppet for the writer

You are not a puppet for the writer

It is your job as an actor to make the decision as to how
to play the character.

You should read what the writer has to say,
but then decide if that makes sense for your
interpretation.

DOES THE WRITER’S NOTES SUGGEST YOU SCREAM?

Maybe that is what you believe your character should do, but perhaps
instead of doing what everyone else is going to do, you decide to hold
in that excitement, feel it, have that energy shoot our of your eyes,
but not have that big screaming moment.

So, it is completely your choice to follow or not follow the
suggestion from the writer.

If you have experienced seeing the writers notes, let us know what you did.
You can post it on facebook.com/howtomodel and also on the bottom of this page.
