3 Ways to Find Photographers Near You

If you are living in a small market, you might not know that there are ways to find photographers near you. Actors and models will be surprised to learn that you can find very talented photographers, and not just an older sister who likes to take photos in the backyard.

A Great Organization

There is a great organization – asmp.org. American Society of Media Photographers. Thousands of photographers are members of this great organization. You can visit the web site and do a search for members in your area. The photographers you want to find are either commercial or assistant photographers.

The assistant photographers might want to build their commercial portfolio or get more experience shooting actors head shots. Maybe you could do a TFP (trade for print) allowing both of you to use the shot to promote yourselves.

Local Theater

Attend a local play. After the play talk with some of the actors. Ask them for the names of local photographers they recommend. If you keep hearing the same name or names from the actors, then they will be the ones you want to interview.

Meetup

meetup.com is another great way of connecting with local photographers in the industry. When you visit the web site, you can do a search for photographers, photography, head shot photographers or commercial photographers to see if there are any groups devoted to these topics. Meetup groups are free and people with similar interest get together to discuss their interests.

If there are no groups yet, then create one. You might find that there are photographers near you who would like to connect with other like minded people.

Always remember, just because someone is living in a small market, it does not mean that they aren’t incredibly talented. They have simply chosen not to live in a major market.

Some of my best acting and modeling jobs have come from cities like Richmond, VA, Columbus, OH, Lancaster, PA and many other places.
